Principal Lecturer and Researcher in Tourism at Bristol Business School, University of the West of England, Bristol, Member of CELTS (the UWE, Bristol Centre for Leisure, Tourism and Society),  He took his MA (St Andrews) in history and political economy and M.Phil (Edinburgh) in urban design and regional planning (Thesis - "Pedestrian Priority Shopping Streets"). He is a Chartered Town Planner, a member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and of the Tourism Society. Before 1983, he was with National Bus Company as a corporate and transport planner and later a marketing manager. In 1993, he led a transnational European Commission funded research project on sustainable tourism and continues to be Academic Advisor to the Europe-wide association of walled towns, the Walled Towns Friendship Circle. He was project co-ordinator for the  Interreg IIC Atlantic Area Project on Marine Ecotourism 2000-2003 and its potential for the regeneration of peripheral coastal communities (META-). He is currently leading the UWE, Bristol involvement on 'ARCHWAY' an Interreg IIIC network project, led by Chester City Council on behalf of the Walled Towns Friendship Circle and has a six month Research Fellowship from Bristol Business School to research the role of tourism in the strategic management of historic (walled) towns.
