Research Fellow with the Centre for Environment and Planning, the School of Geography and Environmental Management and the Bristol Group for Tourism Research.

 

Main research interests include tourism and culture in urban environments, major cultural events, place imagery and tourism alternatives (particularly backpacker and youth travel).

 

Julie is currently on secondment from UWE and based in Catalonia, Spain as  Batista i Roca Research Fellow (Government of Catalonia) in the Department of History and Geography at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, where she is undertaking research with Dr Salvador Anton Clavé. Her project during this fellowship focuses on the major cultural event the 'Universal Forum of Cultures', Barcelona in 2004 and is entitled; CIUTAT: Tourism, Culture and the Production of Urban Space: Changing Images, Shifting Meanings?

She is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Barcelona, in the Grup de Recerca en Economia, Gestió i Polítiques Culturals, where she contributes to the postgraduate course in Cultural Tourism Management and is a partner in the EU ALFA Project IBERTUR - a project in which UWE is also a partner.

 

Recent publications include ‘The Global Nomad: Backpacker Travel in Theory and Practice’ (Channel View, with G. Richards, 2004); and ‘Marine Ecotourism: Issues and Experiences’ (Channel View, with B. Garrod, 2003).
